"The
older you get the more you come to understand your
place in the world. You realize that you want to leave
more than you take," says Craig Foltos, owner
of Foltos Tonsorial Parlor, Batavia, IL. It was 12
years ago that Foltos realized his calling was to
give back to the community by organizing the Chop
Around the Clock, a 30 hour cut-a-thon

to
benefit the Ronald McDonald Children's Charities.
Foltos's philosophy: At some point you must ask your
self what your life stands for. For this salon owner
a beauty hero, giving selflessly to the families of
sick children has become his legacy.
Ronald
McDonald houses provide lodging and support for families
with children receiving care at neighboring hospitals.
Every year, during the first weekend of June, Foltos
takes his salon operations curbside for a two-day,
non-stop outdoor cutting session. As he says, being
outside creates a wow factor, intriguing passersby
to participate in the annual event that includes jugglers
balloon blowers, and a pie-eating contest. To date,
Chop Around the Clock has raised $45,000, with last
year's donation totaling $6,500. Foltos stays grounded
through charitable outreach, using his expertise for
something other than personal gain. "Sometimes
the beauty is self absorbed. There are other things
in life besides creating a level 9 or 10," he
says.

A
true visionary, Craig Foltos clearly sees the power
the beauty industry possesses. Hair dressers can not
only make clients feel good with the right cut or
color, they can also facilitate the feeling of community.
"Life is not just about hair, it's about the
head," says Foltos. In his case, it's also about
the heart. - HOLLY CARTER
